The "Be Do Have" model is based on the idea that our beliefs and identity (BE) influence our behaviours and actions (DO), which then lead to the outcomes or goals we want in life (HAVE).
For example, if you want to feel fit and healthy, you might need to schedule time into your calendar for movement and exercise. This might involve doing things you're reluctant to do, like going to the gym, and require you to support yourself through accountability, scheduling and reminders.
You might also need to believe that you are a person who prioritises their health and fitness. Because if you don't, you will probably find the going even harder, even with all the reminders.
You can use this exercise for your whole life, or for a specific part of your life, and it can be used alongside the Wheel of Life.
You can work through the process in the order suggested. Or you can do it in a way that feels more appropriate for you.
Draw two vertical lines on a piece of paper to create three columns.
Write "BE" at the top of the left column, "DO" in the middle column, and "HAVE" in the right column.
In the right - “HAVE” - column, list the things you want to have in your life.
In the middle - “DO” - column, list the things you want to do in your life.
In the left - “BE” - column, list who you want or need to be for this to happen.
For each "Be", "Do", and "Have" goal, consider what you need to do to achieve it
For each item on your list, write at least one sentence about why it is important to you, or will enhance your life.
Once you have done this exercise, you can start to look at setting goals or intentions to start moving towards the kind of life you have described in this exercise. You may want to consider short-term, medium-term and long-term goals, but do this in a way that will support your goals, rather than against. If, for example, you find it hard to think five years from now, start with two years, one year, or even next month or next week. You could consider setting SMART goals, but if not, maybe focus on the R = realistic and A = achievable when you set them.
